Where do you begin when writing a resume?

Writing your resume can be tough. It can feel like a daunting task, especially when you haven’t updated it in a while. A client I spoke with in February had found her dream job. She had all the qualifications it asked for, and the hiring manager needed the resume within a few days. We looked at her resume together and sighed. It hadn't been updated in nine years.

Life is busy. You don't need your resume until you need it. Where do you begin?

After you have updated it with dates, companies, and titles, pay attention to the following:

KEYWORDS. What #keywords do you see over and over in the job description? They are important. If you have done those things in your job, add them to your resume.

TARGET. What does the company need? What are they looking for? If you can help fix their pain, let them know with examples on your resume-specifics. Show them you have the skills with an achievement.

RELEVANCE. Make sure your experience relevant & succinct. Keep your focus on what the job calls for. Don’t get wrapped up in talking about all your achievements. Focus on what they are looking for.

AUDIENCE. Keep your reader and their needs in mind when updating your resume. Do not try to be the "I can do everything" person when they really only have specific needs in mind.

VALUE. What value do you offer? How are you unique? How do you differ to the next applicant? What is your USP? How is your #skillset and experience different from everyone else's? What makes you stand out?

As Professional Resume Writers, we are well versed in extrapolating your value and presenting it in a powerful way on your resume. We can cut out the fluff that you may be attached to. If you need further help, reach out to us.
