Do I need a Resume & Linkedin Profile?

Often, a consistent conversation with clients is: Do I need a resume AND a LinkedIn profile? Aren't they the same thing?

Yes, you do need both. No, they are not the same. Quite honestly, Linkedin has become as important as your resume.

  1. The visibility of your LinkedIn profile reaches a wide audience, making it important to provide a comprehensive overview of your experience and accomplishments. You can be more informal, and you can let your personality shine. You can place your volunteering projects on it, display media - show off your work. It is a great place to network and can be a place to gather references.

  2. Your ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฒ is more detailed, outlining key stories and accomplishments. Tailored and customized specifically to a position you are applying for.

They need to complement each other. Similar, yet different.

๐ŸŒŸ ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ - The basic information from your resume should be on your profile - company names, dates in roles, job titles, keywords, achievements, degrees obtained, certifications, etc.

โœ” You want the reader to know your story on both. You should be consistent.

โœ” Key action verbs should be present on both.

โœ” You want them to see your steady progression and/or career trajectory.

๐ŸŒŸ ๐——๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€ - One of the main ones is the summary on your resume and the About section on LI.

โœ”The #resume ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† should be a few sentences long outlining your impact, your strengths, and your expertise.

โœ” The #LI ๐—”๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ section is an introduction meant to capture a wider audience, be more informal.

โœ” It is typically written in the first person, interesting, conversational, and engaging.

โœ” It's the human version of your resume summary.

โœ” Resume is the sales page of YOU! With just enough information to make someone curious to interview.

โœ” LinkedIn can capture your references through โ€œrecommendationsโ€. References should no longer be present on a modern-day resume.

โœ” Attach portfolio pieces on LinkedIn, award photos, videos of you speaking publicly - it is the digital version of a brag book!
